The region’s leading, large classical choir, Worcester Festival Choral Society, will be bringing Mendelssohn’s masterwork Elijah to the magnificent surroundings of Worcester Cathedral on Saturday 21 March.

Filled with impressive choruses, emotional arias and dramatic orchestration, Felix Mendelssohn’s 1846 oratorio is renowned as one of the true choral ‘blockbusters’, bringing the story of the biblical prophet Elijah vividly to life with large-scale musical forces and rousing operatic gusto.

Susan White, Chairman of Worcester Festival Choral Society, confirmed: “If you’re looking for a thrilling classical concert experience, this is it. Elijah is packed with wonderful choral music that bursts with Old Testament fire and brimstone. And we are performing it at full, impressive scale. It all makes for a superb, London-quality concert experience right here in Worcester.”

Appearing alongside the 140-strong chorus are acclaimed soloists Sarah Fox (soprano), Jeanette Ager (mezzo soprano), Dominic Lee (tenor) and Edward Grint (bass baritone), together with the Meridian Sinfonia symphony orchestra. Worcester Cathedral’s director of music, Samuel Hudson, conducts.

Worcester Festival Choral Society was founded in 1861 and counts Sir Edward Elgar and Sir David Willcocks amongst its past conductors. Today it performs three, major concerts at the cathedral every year, each typically attracting more than 500 music lovers. It also holds a popular annual ‘Come & Sing’ day, with the next workshop taking place on 28th March.

The Elijah concert on Saturday 21 March starts at 7.30pm. Tickets £10 - £29 from the online box office or TicketSource 0333 666 3366 (local call rate).
