COME & SING! Singers invited to Belshazzar's Feast 1-day workshop
23rd February, 2026
A one-day
‘Come & Sing’ workshop in Worcester in March is offering local amateur
singers the chance to learn one of the most exciting works in the classical choral
repertoire, led by a top conductor.
Hosted by the region’s leading
large classical choir, Worcester Festival Choral Society, the singing workshop
will be held at St Andrew’s Methodist Church,
Pump Street, Worcester on Saturday 28 March.
Singers taking part will learn and informally perform Belshazzar’s Feast, a thrilling cantata written by William Walton in 1931 that tells the dramatic story of ancient Babylon’s decadent ruler, Belshazzar.
The workshop is led by Worcester Cathedral’s inspirational Director of Music, Samuel Hudson, while acclaimed organist and recitalist Nicholas Freestone, Worcester Cathedral’s Assistant Director of Music, will provide piano accompaniment.
Around 130 singers from across the UK are expected to attend the annual event. As well as several singing sessions, participants will enjoy expert insights about the work, vocal tips and the chance to socialise with other singers. The afternoon ends with an informal concert, with soloist, which singers’ friends can attend free of charge. Tickets include loan of a vocal score as well as free teas and coffees. A hot or cold lunch can be pre-ordered on booking. There will also be homemade cakes and a raffle.
Susan White, Chairman of Worcester Festival Choral Society, said: “Belshazzar’s Feast is mainly written for an eight-part chorus and is incredibly exciting to sing! All voice parts are welcome – bass, tenor, alto and soprano. You don’t need choral experience or a great voice to take part, but some ability to read music will be useful to get the most from the day. It’s always an enjoyable, friendly day, so if you love singing, book your place soon!”
Worcester Festival Choral Society, established in 1861, was closely associated with Sir Edward Elgar in its early years and today is one of England's most respected choirs of its kind. In addition to its Come & Sing fundraiser, the Society holds three major concerts at Worcester Cathedral each year.
Registration for the Come & Sing opens from 9.30am, the first singing session starts at 10.15am, and the day concludes at 4.45pm. Entry by pre-booked ticket only, from www.wfcs.online or call 0333 666 3366. Book by Weds 25 March.
